Pattern Painting; and source material (1988 and earlier) [W/P]
Synthetic polymer paint on 2 sheets of paper, c.172 x 122; some source material extant
Coll.: unknown (work on paper); Arkley archive (source material components)
Again, the photos taken at the Brisbane showing of Arkley’s 1988 ‘Casual Works’ (detail reproduced here) appear to be the only record of the entire installation. The whereabouts of the main work on paper are unknown; it seems to have been based on the same sort of pattern Arkley used for Arrows and Crosses 1980
The ensemble was evidently disassembled after the 1988 exhibitions, and several of the subsidiary components were later identified in Arkley’s archive, notably Untitled [‘Tunic’] (c.1981) [W/P], visible at the top left of the IMA installation photo, and a mock-up of Cup and Saucer (1980-81) [W/P] (the mock-up is reproduced separately here).
To the right were a collection of Arkley’s Photographs of Australian flywire screen doors (c.1978-80) [3/M], and other geometric sources (reproduced here via an installation slide in Arkley’s archive), including the photograph of Monash University’s Menzies Building used for the cover of the ‘Casual Works’ catalogue.
