Organic Model A (Thought Form) 1976
Synthetic polymer paint and ink on canvas, 210 x 160
Signed and dated (verso): ‘Howard Arkley 76’; also inscribed on stretcher: ‘H.ARKLEY’ and ‘TOP’
Private collection, Melbourne
This canvas, exhibited in Arkley’s solo show at the Coventry Gallery, Sydney, May 1977 (see slides and photos in Arkley’s files), is a more developed variant of Organic Model F (Liquid) (1976), shown at Tolarno in 1976. The composition is also related to several of Arkley’s works on paper from the same period, both small- and large-scale: see in particular ‘White’ W/P cat.nos.259-262.
Previously listed as probably dating from 1977, the present work has now been identified as dated 1976, following information received from the owner in 2022. First hand viewing of the canvas, kindly made available for closer inspection early in 2024, reveals a subtle variety of drawn, sprayed and painted marks, mostly in black and grey. At certain points, the fine line-work is actually in primary colours, although this is very hard to discern in photographs.
For the theosophical term ‘thought form’, see general comments on Howard Arkley, Tolarno Galleries, Aug.-Sept.1976.
