Untitled ['Girl in a Car'] (1976-7?)
Synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 122 x 122 (?) [according to Deutscher-Menzies 2004]
Coll: unknown
A definite oddity in Arkley’s oeuvre, given the largely conventional use of the air-brush. The artist’s archive slide (with process date Jul79) supports Deutscher-Menzies’ suggested early dating, making it a precocious example of Arkley’s interest in figuration.
The size indicated in the 2004 auction entry (suggesting a square format) does not correlate with the available photos.
Provenance
- auctioned by Deutscher-Menzies, Sydney, 10 March 2004, lot 44 (ill.; as ‘Girl in a Car’, c.1976/77; est.$60-80,000; sold for $58,065), noting previous provenance as: ‘gift from the artist’ to a Melb.P/C (no date provided)
