Static/Dynamic Opposition (1974)
Synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 160 x 180
Coll.: unknown
Crawford & Edgar (Spray 21), although not illustrating this work, describe it as follows: ‘Static/Dynamic Opposition (1974) was created by a chance mark layered over carefully rendered geometric objects read left to right, with the gestural elements created in the opposite direction, lines moving across the canvas’.
Several of Arkley’s ‘white paintings’ fit this description: see e.g. Untitled [Oblong-lines] (1974?) and Untitled [Sprayed line, circles and lines] (1975?); but the most likely suspect seems to be the work reproduced here, via Arkley’s file slides (processed in July 1979).
