Untitled [Nubrick study] (c.1986) [W/P]

Synthetic polymer paint on 4 sheets of paper, 160 x 120 overall

Collection of Callum Morton, Melbourne

This full-scale ‘cartoon’ for Nubrick (1986), first exhibited in the Arkley survey at the TarraWarra Museum of Art late in 2015, provides interesting insights into the process whereby Arkley arrived at his compositions.

Callum Morton, several of whose early 1990s works appeared in the “Friends” section of the TarraWarra exhibition, is a former Arkley student who has pursued a series of inter-related themes centring on the critical representation of architecture. See in particular Linda Michael (ed.), Callum Morton: In Memoriam, Bulleen: Heide Museum of Modern Art, 2011 (exh.cat.).

Morton was living in Los Angeles in 1999, and met Arkley and Alison Burton there, acting as Arkley’s driver for his photographic tour of LA freeways in July 1999: see now Photographs of Los Angeles Freeways (1999) [3/M].
