This lively work, shown in Arkley’s solo exhibition at Tolarno in October 1983, is a variant of the most prominent head in Untitled [Icon study #2] (1982) [W/P] and Icon (triptych) 1983. There are also obvious parallels with the ‘Tattooed’ series, especially Tattooed Head (1983).

The subsequent history of this work is unclear, although it may be identical with an unidentified work with the same dimensions, auctioned by Leonard Joel in August 2001, as noted below; unfortunately no photo has come to light.
