Untitled [W36] (c.1974-76) [W/P]

Synthetic polymer paint, ink and pencil on paper, 56 x 76.3 (sheet)
Private collection, Melbourne

The recto of this double-sided sheet is dominated by expressively sprayed lines and wave-like marks. At the risk of incurring further derision – along the lines of Andrea Stretton’s review of my Carnival in Suburbia in Art & Australia 44.3, 2007 – I find this image curiously reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s turbulent late ‘deluge’ drawings. There is a photo of this drawing in Arkley’s slide archive.

The verso (not reproduced here) includes a sketchy composition in blue wash and black spray paint, and some rectangular boxes outlined in black ink.
