Untitled [Hedge] (1988)

Synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 170 x 135

Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Power Bequest

This work, purchased for the MCA in 1990, and exhibited in the ‘High Pop’ show at Roslyn Oxley9 in 1993, is a slightly different variant of Hedge on Street Corner 1988.

Jeff Gibson, in a discussion of ‘post-Pop’ and the ‘high/low’ binary, in the ‘High Pop’ exhibition catalogue, commented concisely: ‘Howard Arkley’s pop-painterly renderings of the suburban habitat, the mass-cultural ground zero, relocate the modernist sublime within the decorative’.
