House with Native Tree 1997

Synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 175 x 135.2

Signed, dated and titled [on reverse of canvas]

TarraWarra Museum of Art collection (gift of Eva Besen AO and Marc Besen AO 2001)

This is a variant of House with Native Tree 1996 and several other closely related canvases also dating from 1996.

In this case, while the sprayed line is grey, the overall colour scheme is more vivid, with a generally blue-ish tone, and the windows are blank. See also Home with Eucalyptus (1999), for Arkley’s last version of the same composition.

The present painting has been included in several exhibitions at the TarraWarra Museum of Art since it was acquired for that collection in 2001. Many thanks to Anthony Fitzpatrick, Curator, TWMA, for providing additional information and photographs (April 2014), and also to Geoffrey Smith for clarifying the work’s history (Dec.2022).
